The Parks and Recreation Department comprises Parks
and Recreation Administration, Recreation Services, Buildings
and Grounds Maintenance, and the Railroad

Parks and Recreation Administration coordinates and
directs Recreation Services, Buildings and Grounds Maintenance,
and the Railroad Museum, assesses the needs of the residents
of Lomita to ensure that they are adequately receiving
the recreation programs they need, maintains all City
facilities at the highest level of safety and cleanliness
possible, and administers the City budget and all Park
Grant funds available. Parks and Recreation Administration's
key objectives are to:
- Develop a realistic 5 year master plan by December,
1998.
- Develop a self-sustaining account for the Recreation
Department to be completed for the 1998-1999 budget.
- Apply for and acquire the funds allocated to the
City of Lomita in the Safe Neighborhood Park Act of
1996 to be completed by November, 1998.
- Upgrade the ball field lighting system before next
year's softball season.
- Adjust all fees and rental charges by January, 1999.
- Upgrade the museum heating system as par of the
energy conservation program.
- Investigate the purchase of the L.A. County property
next to Lomita Park for expansion of the park.
Recreation Services provides complete, diversified,
and affordable recreational programs that meet the needs
of our residents and fill their leisure hours, conducts
special events, field trips, youth sports, adult sports,
preschool, and contracts classes. Recreation Services
also supervises the parks and provides programs that
are geared toward the entire family and a variety of
programs for senior citizens. The Recreation Department's
key objectives are to:
- Develop a program for part-time employee advancement/promotions.
- Hire a team of contractors to complete an estimate
for backing up the softball diamond.
- Computerize our registration system or investigate
what it would take to do so. Buy computers for the
department.
- Resurface the slab area to include basketball lines
or paint key.
- Add plastic vinyl over the dug out for protection
from the sun during the summer months, shielding the
children from excessive heat.
- Develop a new accounting system for all programs
that generate revenue by September, 1999.
- Expand existing recreation programs and services
by July, 1999.
Building and Grounds Maintenance maintains all City
parks, the Railroad Museum, City buildings, landscaped
areas, tennis courts, softball fields, gymnasium, Community
Building, Stephenson Center, playground equipment, picnic
shelter, and City Hall complex. Building and Grounds
Maintenance keeps all facilities clean, graffiti free,
in safe operating condition and accessible to the public,
and monitors and maintains all irrigation systems to
conserve water. Building and Grounds Maintenance's
key objectives are to:
- Improve the picnic areas at the Museum annex, Veteran's
Park, and Metro Park by June.
- Improve the looks of the entrance to Lomita Park
by removing the old, broken railroad ties around planters
by October.
- Improve the irrigation systems in the parks by replaicing
old sprinklers with more efficient ones to conserve
water by next Summer.
- Improve the landscaping around the tennis courts
to provide more sunlight.
- Service the Landscape Maintenance District, including
bike path.
